The Pour Man Begins

I moved to Wisconsin thirteen days ago. In that time, as a part of the tremendous show of hospitality my family has received, I have been generously introduced to Wisconsin's proud beer tradition.  Different groups of friends had introduced me to no fewer than nine local brews within my first few days in town. Other friends informed me that my new neighborhood has a tavern. And not just my neighborhood but every neighborhood (in the state!) has a tavern. Taverns are considered essentials, like police stations and post offices, requisites to calling one's community a town. In larger cities, like mine, taverns delineate where one neighborhood ends and another begins. So I was impressed, if not surprised, to learn that a nearby eatery serves 175 Wisconsin beers, with just one "import" - from Minnesota.

All of this leads me to create this page, which I intend as a kind of reference for myself in the face of overwhelming variety. I haven't consumed more beer since arriving in Wisconsin; but many, many more beers. Prudence suggests I keep track.

I am by no means a beer aficionado. I appreciate those who discern "notes" and "tones" but I mostly feel intimidated by the language and don't find the language especially helpful in predicting what I'll like next. Hence this blog will record the basics: label images (if available), city of origin (part of my interest in Wisconsin history), a section for remarks (which I reserve the right not to use), and my simple 4 tier rating system, which will function as follows:

Skunk
Self-explanatory. Characterized by the firm commitment to never consume the beer again.

Meh
Not great, but you can see the intent and/or idea. You wouldn't turn it down if it was the only beer offered at a party.

Eh (with raised eye-brows)
Good. Solid. May become a regular in the rotation.

Yum
Really good. You jump at the opportunity to pick this one up and recommend it to friends when talking about the best of Wisconsin beer.

That's it. Easy, huh?

Let me know when your reviews don't match my own and when you find good beers that haven't yet made the the blog. After all, beers are best poured with friends.

Prost!
